What is screen time?

Watching TV, working on a computer, or playing video games are examples of activities done in front of a screen. Screen Time allows you to see how much time you and your children spend on apps, websites, and other online activities.

Recommended screen time by age?

Screen use should be limited to instructional content with a caregiver between the ages of 18 and 24 months. Limit non-educational screen usage for children aged 2 to 5 to around 1 hour on weekdays and 3 hours on weekends.

Encourage healthy behaviors and minimize screen-based activities for children aged 6 and up.

What are screen time rules?

  • Screen time is a privilege.
  • Screen time is a choice.
  • Screen time doesn't mix with the company.
  • Screen time is not private.
  • Screen time has no place at the table.

How to use the summer screen time rules?

  1. Print out the printable. You can either laminate the printable for multiple usages if you have more than 1 child or just print it and clip it on a clipboard.
  2. In order for your child to get screen time, they have to complete items on the Summer Screen Time Rules printable.
  3. Add any items not provided in the printable by writing them down on the blank space provided.
  4. Suggestions: Print the Summer Screen Time Rules on card paper, or laminate it after printing it on regular letter size paper. You and your child can then use a removable marker pen and reuse the printable as many times as you like!

Setup

The first step is to print off the summer screen time rules. You may want to laminate the sheet so it can be reused over and over again. Or, print the rules on white cardstock so they are sturdier and easier to use.

My favorite supplies include printer paper, cardstock, markers, pencils, colored pencils, and a good printer. By keeping these on hand you will be well on your way to enjoying some screen time with your kids. Offer some Microwave Popcorn as a post-assignment treat.

Use

How to use:

Post the rules in a common area. Use in conjunction with printable screen time tickets.

What are printable Screen Time tickets?

Printable screen tickets are awarded to children for completing chores or earning them by completing extra tasks. They can be redeemed for screen time.
