15 PG-13 Halloween Movies

October 18, 2023 by What to Watch Guide 7 Comments

These PG-13 Halloween Movies are fun to watch, easy to find, and perfect for a Halloween night activity! Grab your popcorn and blankets and let's get started. You'll also want to check out these 20 Best PG-13 Halloween Movies on Netflix.

Halloween theme with text: "PG-13-Halloween Movies"

I have a 9-year-old daughter and a 16-year-old son. They do very different things on Halloween. My daughter still loves to trick-or-treat.

My teenage son usually doesn't do anything special. He's usually home to give out candy to any visitors to our house or maybe go to a party.

Tweens are the kids who don't want to watch baby movies but aren't old enough to watch adult movies. Watching PG-13 with or without parental supervision will still give them a thrilling Halloween experience.

You aren't going to find ones that everyone in the family can watch, but these aren't super scary either. I love Common Sense Media's tips on How to Choose a Scary Movie for Your Kid.

These movies are some great non-slasher Halloween movies for teens to watch with their friends. We picked our favorites, and gave you the cheat sheet for each of them!

Scary PG-13 Halloween Movies

Common Sense Media gives these tips for parents of middle school kids:

  • Pushing boundaries may be OK. Some kids of this age are ready to be scared silly. You still should be mindful of blood and gore, but in general skeletons, monsters, and aliens are okay. Even so, stick to movies that have humor mixed in, or those with safe-and-sound endings.
  • Give reassurance when necessary. Other kids still scare easily. Middle school is when scary movies start being a big part of sleepovers and movie outings with friends. Even if your child isn't ready for the scarier stuff, it can be hard for her to tell that to friends who want to see the latest zombie flick. Let your children know that it's ok to be scared and to tell their friends they'd rather watch something else.

What are some kid-friendly Halloween movies?

These family-friendly Halloween movies are great to watch before, during, or after Halloween with the whole family.

What's the scariest PG-13 movie?

Since I DON'T watch scary movies, I'll defer to Game Spot. They published this list of the 11 Scariest Horror Movies Rated PG-13 (And Lower).

What are the rules for PG-13 movies?

In the early 1980s, complaints about violence and gore in films such as Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom and Gremlins, both of which received PG ratings, refocused attention on films seen by small children and pre-teens.

The PG classification, “no longer matched a notion of childhood most parents in America could agree on.” A suggested a new intermediate rating between “PG” and “R.”

The “PG-13” rating was introduced on July 1, 1984, with the advisory “Parents Are Strongly Cautioned to Give Special Guidance for Attendance of Children Under 13 – Some Material May Be Inappropriate for Young Children”. (Source)

Is the Halloween movie PG-13?

The original Halloween movie, released in 1978, is rated R. All prequels and sequels are rated R, too.
