The Ford Mustang is a notoriously well-known car. Since its inception in the 1960s, the Mustang has undergone some serious stylistic and performance changes.

Not to mention, from the 1990s through today, Ford’s Special Vehicle Team has revamped the Mustang to have more speed and power in its performance. Therefore, it’s no surprise the Mustang and its SVT follow-ups have been used in numerous racing and action movies.

Bullitt (1968)

Not only is this movie notable for the Ford Mustang, but it is also the Ford Mustang movie. Released In 1968, this action-thriller stars actor and racing enthusiast Steve McQueen as a police lieutenant who follows mob hitmen through intense car chases to protect a criminal’s brother in custody.

The film recognized in the US National Film Registry as culturally significant, is notorious for its car chase scene in which McQueen outraces a Dodge Charger in his 1968 Mustang GT Fastback. This scene is acknowledged as one of the best car chases in American film history.

Farrah Fawcett, Kate Jackson, and Jaclyn Smith star as three titillating private investigators for the Charles Townsend Agency. Fawcett, while only starring for one season, influenced popular culture with her signature blue-striped white 1976 Mustang Cobra II.

The Princess Diaries (2001)

This 2001 coming-of-age teen romance isn’t the first movie you’d think of when picturing a fast car, but Anne Hathaway’s character is known for cruising in a 1966 Mustang. Hathaway stars as Mia Thermopolis, a teenager in San Francisco who discovers she is a princess.

The movie is also notable for reviving Julie Andrews’s career, as well as introducing Anne Hathaway as a bankable star.

The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift (2006)

An intense action-packed racing film is the perfect platform to feature fast cars, fighting, and dangerous turns and handling skills. The Fast and Furious franchise is notorious for all of these. 

Tokyo Drift, released in 2006, is the third installment of the series and follows the story of high school car enthusiast Sean Boswell (played by Lucas Black) as he moves to Tokyo and its drifting community.

Boswell and friends customize a 1967 Mustang Fastback from spare parts, an extraordinary scene whose innovation and engineering helped rebuild the car’s popularity.

I Am Legend (2007)

This 2007 postapocalyptic film stars Will Smith as a US Army virologist in New York City on a mission to find a cure for a mutant outbreak. Based on the 1954 book of the same name, the film was the seventh-highest grossing film of 2007, with Smith receiving praise for his performance.

In the film, Smith’s character drives across the ruins of New York in a white-striped red 2007 Shelby GT500.
