The turtles are named after famous Renaissance artists: Leonardo, Michelangelo, Donatello, and Raphael. They were created by Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird in 1984 as a parody of the popular comic book heroes of the time.

They are known for their distinctive personalities, with Leonardo as the leader, Michelangelo as the free-spirited jokester, Donatello as the technological genius, and Raphael as the hot-headed rebel.
