WHAT IS SLAVERY?

Slavery is, in the strictest sense of the term, any system in which principles of property law are applied to people, allowing individuals to own, buy and sell other individuals, as a de jure form of property.  (Source)

How were slaves captured in Africa?

Enslaved Africans are kidnapped and sold.

The majority of Africans enslaved were caught in conflicts or kidnapped, however, some were sold into slavery as debt or punishment.

The captives were marched to the coast, tied to one another, and forced to endure long trips of weeks or even months.

What kind of slavery exists today?

Modern forms of slavery can include debt bondage, where a person is forced to work for free to pay off a debt, child slavery, forced marriage, domestic servitude, and forced labor, where victims are made to work through violence and intimidation.
