What is Shirley Chisholm best known for?

Shirley Chisholm is well known for becoming the first African-American from a major political party to run for president in 1972, as well as the first Democratic woman of any race to do so. Chisholm's presidential attempt, however, was far from her sole triumph in her 80-year career.

Who is playing Shirley Chisholm?

“Shirley Chisholm,” as played by Uzo Aduba, not only made history as the first African American congresswoman but also as the first African American presidential candidate from a major political party, when she started her historic 1972 campaign.

She was a co-founder of the National Women's Political Caucus and the Congressional Black Caucus and was instrumental in getting the Equal Rights Amendment enacted in the House in 1971.
