Typically, the sports in movies and TV shows tend to be football, basketball, or baseball.

However, times are changing, and Hollywood is featuring the sport of lacrosse more and more as its popularity grows across the US. Here are some of the top lacrosse movies and TV shows to watch that have given the sport the spotlight it deserves.

Crooked Arrows

The first film that makes the list is one that focuses entirely on the sport. Crooked Arrows was the first major lacrosse movie, and in the vein of The Mighty Ducks, it follows a team of young Native Americans that goes up against a prep school team in a classic underdog story. Some movies on this list don’t get the sport right, but Crooked Arrows is one that certainly does the game justice since professional lacrosse players worked on the film.

American Pie

When you think of American Pie, you might not think of lacrosse, but the film does feature the sport. The presentation of the game isn’t entirely accurate, but it’s still notable because it was one of the first times the sport made it to the big screen.

Mean Girls

Another film that makes the list is Mean Girls. The film doesn’t revolve around lacrosse, but there’s a major reference to the sport toward the end of the film—even if the portrayal isn’t entirely accurate, since the players are missing some gear that’s used in women’s lacrosse.

Spirit Free

Lacrosse began with the Iroquois. They call it their “medicine game” and it is the lifeblood of their Nation. The Iroquois Nationals Lacrosse Team is not only among the world's best but ambassadors for their Nation's sovereignty and recognition.

In 2015, the Iroquois hosted the World Championships on Native soil for the first time; and history, politics, and culture all collided before the world.

Keepers of the Game

Keepers of the Game focuses on the sport of lacrosse, which is considered a sacred game in the Akwesasne Mohawk Territory, where it was invented. There are many in the community who believe that it's “the creator's game” and, as such, is “just for men.”

Because of these traditions and beliefs, controversy ensues when a group of Native American teenage girls attending the public high school just outside the reservation wants to start a girls' lacrosse team. | Stream on Apple TV

Teen Wolf

You may be familiar with the classic Teen Wolf film starring Michael J. Fox, but in 2011, MTV came out with its own take on the story. In the 1985 film, basketball was the sole focus, but in the MTV series, one of the many changes they made was incorporating lacrosse instead.

Runaways

Marvel’s Runaways is the final entry on our list of the top lacrosse movies and TV shows to watch. The Hulu series ran from 2017 to 2019 and follows teens who find out their parents are supervillains in the Marvel universe. Chase Stein, played by Gregg Sulkin, is a high school lacrosse player in the show.
