The Best Sports Documentaries of All Time

February 8, 2023 by Casey Cartwright

Documentaries are an interesting form of media as the filmmakers use the medium to dive deep into different subjects from around the world, such as music, people, and sports. While many documentaries have focused on sports, some stand out for their engaging editing and the stories the filmmakers try to tell with them.

While many great documentaries focus on different athletes, these are the best sports documentaries of all time that you must watch!

Diego Maradona

In the world of soccer, or football in other countries, a few superstars have gone on to become legends. Diego Maradona from the Napoli football club is one of those players. His dominance in the sport and the charismatic life he led outside of the game made him so interesting, and this documentary shines just a glimpse onto the star that was Maradona.

The Last Dance

Even though Michael Jordan was one of the best players of all time and had some of the most expensive basketball trading cards, there wasn’t a high-quality documentary about Michael.

He had always been somewhat opposed to the idea since the documentary wouldn’t be very comprehensive, struggling to fully capture what Jordan’s career was like. As long-form documentaries became more popular, Michael became interested, and soon, one of the best and most in-depth looks at basketball and one of its greatest players hit Netflix and ESPN.

Trophy Kids

While there are athletes who can do great things in the world of sports, millions of kids also play those sports, and thousands of kids are pressured to turn into world-star athletes. Trophy Kids follows these kids and the helicopter parents pushing them to excel in their sports. It’s a stark reminder that you must work hard to be great, but you also need support instead of someone yelling at you and pushing you to the brink of insanity.

Senna

In the racing world, it’s hard to find someone who doesn’t know the name Ayrton Senna. He was a legendary motorsport driver at the top of his career, but conflicting forces in his life constantly pulled him to different places. Senna wanted to be the best, and he pretty much got there—but then tragedy struck.

The King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters

This documentary doesn’t showcase a traditional sport, but it does follow the history and the hunt for the world record in the arcade video game Donkey Kong. The main players had been playing for nearly 25 years, and there have been new faces in recent years who also want a shot at the title of the world record holder. It’s not traditionally a sports documentary, but it has the same action and intense storylines that many sports wish they had.

In the world of documentaries, these are the best ones that focus on different sports, and some are so great that they transcend the traditional sports documentary. These films cover their subjects with such nuance and care, making them must-watches for anyone interested in sports, documentaries, or people.
