The Meg

Previously thought to be extinct, a massive creature attacks a deep-sea submersible, leaving it disabled and trapping the crew at the bottom of the Pacific.

With time running out, a visionary oceanographer recruits rescue diver Jonas Taylor to save the crew and the sea itself from an unimaginable threat — a 75-foot-long prehistoric shark known as the Megalodon.

The Shallows

Still reeling from the loss of her mother, medical student Nancy Adams travels to a secluded beach for some much-needed solace. Despite the danger of surfing alone, Nancy decides to soak up the sun and hit the waves.

Suddenly, a great white shark attacks, forcing her to swim to a giant rock for safety. Left injured and stranded 200 yards from shore, the frightened young woman must fight for her life as the deadly predator circles her in its feeding ground.

47 Meters Down

Young sisters Kate and Lisa and travel to Mexico for a vacation filled with sun, fun, and adventure. Lisa needs some extra persuasion when Kate suggests that they go diving in shark-infested waters.

Safe in their protective cage, the thrill-seeking siblings come face to face with a group of majestic great whites. Their worst fears soon become a reality when the cage breaks away from their boat, sending them plummeting to the ocean floor with a dwindling supply of oxygen.

Sharknado

Nature's deadliest killer takes to the skies in the ultimate gill-ty pleasure as a group of friends try to save the Santa Monica coast from shark-infested tornadoes.

Empire of the Sharks

Empire of the Sharks was perhaps the most entertaining of the shark movies we binge-watched this year, as described by this reviewer's wife as “like Star Wars but with shark whispers instead of the force.”

The majority of the Earth is covered in water in the future, and the limited land is governed by a warlord and his shark army. Humans are kept as shark food until two friends risk their lives in an attempt to free themselves from their captor and his legion of sharks.

Ghost Shark 2: Urban Jaws

  • Amazon Prime Video (Video on Demand)
  • Johnny Hall, Campbell Cooley, Kathleen Burns (Actors)
$7.99

Ghost Shark 2: Urban Jaws

The film's entire visual is strange as hell, with aspects of classic slasher films, indie vibes, and noir thrown in, and it oscillates between seeming mockery and appearing to take itself seriously.

The angry ghosts of sharks are haunting the earth in the reality where this film is set, seeking vengeance on humanity for overfishing them to furnish fins for shark fin soup.

These ghost sharks have a human level of intelligence and may be destroyed using explosive devices and EMPs for reasons that have never been fully explained—though the more powerful the shark breed (Great Whites at the top, naturally), the larger the explosion must be.

Ghost Shark 2 is a terrific film to watch with a group of friends and some wine, with archetypes pulled from Jaws and Supernatural, a lot of scenery-chewing, and some uplifting sections (maybe a lot of wine).

Ice Sharks
Ice Sharks
  • Amazon Prime Video (Video on Demand)
  • Edward DeRuiter, Jenna Parker, Kaiwi Lyman-Mersereau (Actors)
$9.99
Buy on Amazon

Ice Sharks

Ice Sharks' set is in an isolated Arctic research outpost and uses that isolation to increase the risk. What appears to be Greenland sharks (already terrifying) venturing outside of their typical territory turn out to be a prehistoric mutation: sharks with fins that can cut through ice.

They're also extremely intelligent and can jump enormous distances because, well, why not? The picture combines unbelievable gore with the kind of complex survival challenges that you'd find in a space station, and it has a splashy ending. Naturally, a pun was intended.

Bait

A freak tsunami traps a group of people in a submerged grocery store. As they try to escape, they are hunted by white sharks that are hungry for meat.

Deep Blue Sea

Deep Blue Sea

When the facility's backers send an executive to investigate the experiments, a routine procedure goes awry and a shark starts attacking the researchers.

Now, with sharks outnumbering their human captors, McAlester and her team must figure out a way to stop them from escaping to the ocean and breeding.

Jaws

Jaws

When a young woman is killed by a shark while skinny-dipping near the New England tourist town of Amity Island, police chief Martin Brody wants to close the beaches, but mayor Larry Vaughn overrules him, fearing the loss of tourist revenue will cripple the town.

Ichthyologist Matt Hooper and grizzled ship captain Quint offer to help Brody capture the killer beast, and the trio engages in an epic battle of man vs. nature.

The Reef
